Maria Christina Falls

Do you know what is the second of the highest waterfalls in the Philippines?

According to some research, Maria Christina falls is the second of the highest waterfalls in the Philippines. It is located on the suburbs of Iligan City on Mindanao Island. There are over 20 waterfalls in the island but being the grandest of all, Maria Christina has a big contribution to why the island was cold as the City of Majestic Waterfalls’. Specifically, you can found it on about 9.3 km southwest of Iligan City. Its water came from the river of Agus., and it is doing great help by supplying the Agus VI hydroelectric plant. Aside from that, Maria Christina falls is also the one that helps to supply the production of 70% of Mindanao’s electricity. It is open for the visitors only from Sundays and special holidays, for the power plant is shot for at least an hour or more to get the river back to its full flow. If you want to have a great view of the falls even if it’s not on its full flow, you can go on the 3rd floor of the National Power Corporation building. Another great thing is, you can find a lot of Maria Christina falls photo in the adjacent glass room of the same building. If you want to swim in the falls, I’m sorry but it is strictly prohibited because of the unexpected and uncontrollably strong currents.

Because of the initiative of The National Power Corporation to develop the National Power Nature Park, you can now enjoy some activities such as rock climbing and trekking. There are also souvenir shops wherein you can buy some printed shirts and something that is related to Maria Christina Falls. Getting it is not that hard for the supplies of unlimited jeepneys will take you from the port area of Iligan City. After riding, they will take you to the bridge of Agus which is only 30 minutes walk till the island.

This fall is mostly cold to as ‘twin falls’ as the flow of water is separated by a rock at the brink of the fall. Though it’s not in its full flow, it can surely captivate tourist’s heart because of its natural wonder and beauty. Waiting is now over. Come and let us visit the amazing falls.
